The Reign of King Lander and the Prosperity of Old Copium

The Kingdom of Copium flourished under King Lander IV, who skillfully balanced the needs of the north and south. His reign brought stability to a resource-rich kingdom. The south was known for its fertile lands, producing opium, which became a cornerstone of the economy and a vital part of cultural traditions. In contrast, the northern mountainous region thrived on copper mining, supplying raw materials for early industrial growth.

King Lander implemented policies that regulated both the opium trade and copper mining, ensuring a strong economy. Trade routes expanded, and while opium became a valuable export, an illicit drug trafficking industry also emerged, especially with Country 1, where demand was high. The south's agricultural wealth and the north's industrial foundations set the stage for modernization.

The Twins and the Division of Copium

After King Lander’s death, his twin children, Prince Jarne and Princess Elise, inherited the throne but couldn’t agree on governance. This disagreement led to the kingdom’s division into North Copium, ruled by Jarne, and South Copium, ruled by Elise.

  • North Copium developed a militaristic and industrial culture under Jarne. The copper mines brought profit but also significant environmental damage, polluting rivers and valleys. Despite its industrial wealth, the region faced high unemployment due to the inability of primary industries to support its young, poorly educated population.

  • South Copium continued to prosper agriculturally, especially with opium crops that made it famous. Elise focused on cultural growth and trade but was vulnerable to rising tensions with the north. When Jarne began blocking trading routes to disrupt the southern opium trade with Country 1, tensions escalated dramatically, ultimately sparking the Great Civil War.

Rising Discord and Social Strain

The blocked trade routes ignited deep economic resentment in the south, as Country 1 became furious over their inability to acquire opium. This external pressure further strained relations, leading to growing unrest in both regions. Jarne’s increasingly authoritarian rule in the north imposed strict laws to control the population, while many young northerners, frustrated by limited opportunities, fled south, only to find high unemployment and few prospects.

In the south, Elise’s diplomatic efforts attracted foreign traders, especially those interested in opium. However, this influx strained traditional family values, leading to fears that South Copium’s close-knit culture was crumbling under external pressures.

Ecological Crisis and the Question of Industrial Waste

As mining expanded in North Copium, a major issue arose: the disposal of industrial waste. Unregulated industries dumped toxic byproducts into rivers that flowed south, damaging the fertile farmlands of South Copium. This pollution escalated tensions, with Elise accusing Jarne of deliberately undermining her rule by harming the land.

Neither side could agree on how to handle the environmental crisis. In the north, industrial leaders prioritized economic growth over environmental concerns, while farmers in the south demanded reparations for the damage to their agriculture.

The Imminent Civil War and Cultural Decline

The division of Copium, worsened by economic and environmental issues, led to a cultural decline. Since King Lander’s death, the kingdom's rich traditions had come under pressure. In the north, Jarne’s regime suppressed cultural practices that didn't align with state priorities, causing the arts to fade. In the south, Elise’s open-border policies weakened local customs due to increasing foreign influence.

Tensions peaked with frequent border disputes over rare resources, particularly water from the River Sylon. With the blockade of trade routes and rising hostilities, the kingdom erupted into the Great Civil War.

In this fractured kingdom, a charismatic leader named Jana emerged. She recognized that the only way to combat the growing threat from Country 1, which was increasingly hostile over its lack of opium supply, was to reunite the divided nation. Rallying support with promises of prosperity and sustainability, Jana positioned herself as the voice of a united future at the River Sylon Summit.

The Future of Copium

As Copium stood on the brink of civil war, its future remained uncertain. The once-great kingdom, built on the dual pillars of opium and copper, was overshadowed by environmental decay, social unrest, and a fading cultural identity. The people of Copium, young and undereducated, found themselves caught between the industrial ambitions of the north and the agricultural riches of the south. Understanding that survival depended on unity, Jana led efforts to bridge the divide between North and South Copium. By focusing on common goals and rallying the citizens, she inspired them to set aside their differences and stand together against the looming threat from Country 1.

The castles that once symbolized strength now served as reminders of a fractured past. As the citizens looked toward a united future, they hoped that Jana's leadership would not only protect them from external dangers but also help restore their once-proud legacy. With determination and courage, the people of Copium rallied under Jana’s vision, striving to reclaim their identity as a united nation ready to face any challenge ahead.
